Planetary Research is a community-led journal that is being developed by the international planetary science community. The journal will use the diamond open-access publishing model, which means that there will be no article processing fees for authors and no subscription fees for readers. The journal, run as part of our non-profit organization, will operate with a transparent governance and will promote the work it publishes to the scientific community and the general public alike. Manuscript submissions are expected to open in January 2026.
We seek candidates for the journal’s editorial board, including the editor-in-chief, editors, and associate editors. We are also seeking candidates for the journal’s media and technical teams. Interested candidates should provide a CV, a publication list, and a short letter motivating their interest in the position to the chair of the search committee before July 1, 2025. No prior experience is required. Additional information about the journal can be found on our pre-launch website https://planetary-research.org.Â
Editor-in-chief
We are seeking a single editor-in-chief who will be responsible for enforcing all editorial policies of the journal, standardizing peer-review practices among the editors, appointing associate editors when needed, and approving special issues. The editor-in-chief is by right a member of the association’s board of directors. The editor-in-chief, if desired, may oversee the peer review of manuscripts submitted to the journal.
Editors
We are seeking approximately five editors who will oversee the peer review of manuscripts that are submitted to the journal. Editors are responsible for the decision to publish a manuscript or not, and the workload is expected to be about two new manuscripts per month (which can be adjusted to suit the time constraints of each editor). Editors can make use of associate editors for various aspects of the peer review process.
Associate editors
We are seeking approximately 10 associate editors in a broad range of disciplines to aid the editors in various aspects of the peer review process. Associate editor tasks may include contacting reviewers, assessing the reviews, and providing independent assessments of manuscripts. The expected workload of an associate editor is expected to be less than one new manuscript per month.
